tumblr user taurusinthetardis made this post on June 9th, using the song “Flare” by Clark “plazmataz” Powell off Homestuck vol. 8,and deliberately did not give credit, calling it an “experiment”. That post now has over 45,000 notes; the song has close to 150,000 plays. And nobody knows that Clark Powell wrote it! In fact, some people are pissed off that “the surprise” is now “ruined” for them. Of course, taurusinthetardis would never do something that mean. Their plan is to release the name of the artist on June 24th, and not a second sooner. Presumably this is to prove the point that “oh shit, Homestuck isn’t terrible, how can it be when something this beautiful exists”.
In case you can’t parse the various ways why that’s bullshit, let me break it down for you. Clark Powell deserved to be credited from day one, and only revealing that he’s the artist behind this “mystery track” on your terms, when you decide it’s convenient for you, is the scummiest and most self-serving thing I’ve heard in a long time. If your plan falls apart at the idea of an independent artist getting recognition for their work, it really wasn’t a good plan to begin with, yeah?
It’s not just that taurusinthetardis is being self-serving, though. This affects Clark Powell far, far worse than anyone else. That’s 45,000 notes and 150,000 plays that he gets zero credit or recognition for. That is a huge amount of popularity for anybody. It’s the kind of thing that could make or break somebody’s entire career.
One last thing. I’m not at all familiar with the royalty agreement that the Homestuck music team set up with Andrew Hussie, nor the payment plan that Bandcamp has to its artists. But let’s run some rough numbers. Homestuck vol. 8 sells for $10.25 and has 41 tracks on it. Paypal takes $0.59 from each sale so we’re down to $9.66. Making some assumptions (everyone gets the same cut, Andrew takes no royalties of his own), that’s $0.24 per track. Assuming half of the 150,000 plays on that post would have gone on to purchase the album if they’d known it was an option, 75,000 * $0.24 is $18,000.
That’s $18,000 that Clark Powell should have gotten for this track. $18,000 on an “experiment” to presumably prove the already-obvious point that Homestuck isn’t “all bad”.
That’s why you always attribute the artist.
People have been coming out in my defense today in big ways, just to show that they respect music and the people who make it; I’ve been floored. Thank you so much, to all of you.
I make my music for you.
As a reminder, to all who heard the song and maybe wondered what it was, it’s called Flare. I wrote it, it was used in Homestuck, and you can buy the song here.
Whether you have a project that needs a killer soundtrack or you’ve got a musical idea that you’d like to see through to its end, I am your expert. Like most self-employed artists, I am always looking for work, and no job is too small.
Even if you aren’t looking to commission me at the moment, giving this post a reblog is an awesome way to support what I do!
Homestuck may know me as Clark “The One That Made Flare” Powell, but I make other music too! Mostly Serenade arrangements, turns out.
My latest personal record is called Namesake, encompassing a dancing plethora of styles centering around either cello or piano. There is a little something for everyone!
I make my entire living by selling my music, so the best way to help support me or my art is to pick up a copy of the album or to help spread the word around!
This musical piece was done by Homestuck’s Plazmataz, a single piece paid by me in honor of the ending of the Black Chronicles, a Legend of Five Rings game that lasted two years and then had the rare accomplishment of actuallyending successfully.
It ended up as a cinematic, unified piece instead of the six songs that had been originally intended (one theme song, and pieces for the characters), but dear lord is it lovely.

Want art/music from Plazmataz and Andarix?
Hello everyone, my name is Andarix, and if you’ve been following me for long, then you’ve probably been aware that Plazmataz and I moved in together a few days ago. Even though things are going well and we’re mostly set up, we still need a few items for the house. So we’re both offering commissions (illustrations/design from me, music from him) in order to get a few wishlist items.
What you’d be getting:
From Andarix, something like these: (Paintings, designs, illustrations)
Rose and Dave designs (here)
Music that sounds like this:
- Symphony Impossible to Play
- Three in the Morning
- Homestuck Anthem
- Even in Death
- Austin, Atlantis
The list of what we’re taking in trade:
- A teapot/cups. Best option here.
- Select teas from that same link. Message us about them.
- This router. (We’re using the internet one at a time right now…)
- Decorations for the walls! Our walls are entirely blank right now besides the art from Medium.
So that’s what we need in particular, but if you don’t have any of those or just want to commission either of us using other items/money, that’s okay too.
Or if you just want our address to come
stalk ushang out party, that’s cool. Just ask. We promise not to throw things at you.
However, it’s best to hurry, because we’re only taking the first few responses we get! Oh also, if you want music from him AND art from me, ask about a discount on a combined commission.
ALSO If you’d like to reblog this post, we’d be super appreciative!
